'The Frequencies that convey the sound the distortion, that crowned a generation's
emotions.'

 

To paint these large face images, I generally make a few small sketches with notes about colour choice and reference a series of photographs. (It’s not practical to paint at this large scale from life). I’ve never really considered them ‘portraits’ in the classic sense, as always, they tend to represent messages or thoughts on a particular subject. The actual ‘look’ often changes as I add embellishments during the making of the piece.

 

I envisaged a young person screaming or shouting but with the sound blocked by a sheet of glass or something. A kind of enforced silencing.
